the magical world of airsickness bags

Welcome. This is what my wife calls "a bunch of stupid jokes and pictures of paper bags." She's right about the jokes. She's wrong about the bags: some of them are plastic.

What the critics say: "Utterly unnotable" (Wikipedia editor). "Ridiculous collections #4" (Buzzfeed). Other comments: "As complete wastes of time go, it's a very high quality complete waste of time... An entirely dispensable source of inane comments about a truly trivial subject... A monument to the planet's worst corporate design... An unwelcome reminder of some of the more unpleasant moments in our lives."

Donations (unused, please) of bags not represented in the bag gallery are welcomed -- please mail to this address, and I'll credit you on this site! I am happy to trade any extras that I have. Check out the links to other bag sites, find out how you can use your spare bags, and explore the fascinating world of bag manufacturers

Highlights: The design features page reveals the secrets of professional baggery, and the logos page analyses the enigma of airline corporate identities. Search for your favourite bag, browse the bag gallery by country and airline, and check out the biggest, best and worst bags!

News

Meet other people just like you

Come to the 19th International Air Transport Exchange Days (Internationale Tauschtage der Luftfahrt) in Frankfurt, Germany, on 6/7 November 2004.

A big draw for aficionados of airline memorabilia. Look for the bag collectors in the shadier sections of the exhibition hall.

Brazilian collector Denir Camargo says that he realized baggists also attended when he saw two of them nearly coming to blows over a TAM bag. Denir will be bringing his latest batch of Latin American bags to this year's event.

No, I wont' be there: I'll still be foraging for bags in Bangladesh.

Location: Turnhalle Frankfurt Schwanheim, Saarbrücker Str. 4, Frankfurt/Main. Time: 10:00-18.00. For more information, contact Kurt Preis, tel. & fax +49 (0)6139 960673, email KbpreisOpuccini@aol.com

Thanks to Denir for this info.

Bags for sale

Elisabeth Koch asked me if I wanted to buy her collection: 474 bags (though quite a few of those are duplicates).

Sadly, I don't buy stolen goods on principle :-) and anyway I've got no pocketmoney this month... I've used all my considerable charm to persuade her to give me the bags for free, but to no avail.

So, if you're interested in a quick boost to your collection, and are willing to pay hard cash, contact her at elisabeth.koch@excite.com.

(I made the bag on the left up... It isn't one of the ones she's selling.)

Swamped by swaps

If you're hoping to find that rare red Celebes bag still in my swaps list... sorry, it's been snapped up. The Aero Mongolias and Cebu Pacific have gone too. But I've still got lots of good items left! Check the Swaps page for more!

Yet another airline to avoid

Alas, Gulf Air have now gone over to plain white bags. Instead of their attractive orange bag with falcon logo, passengers now have to make do with a plain white monstrosity.

"Better in keeping with our new purple decor", said the stewardess when I challenged her.

I agreed that the combination of orange bags and purple seatcovers might increase the use of the former and the risk of splatter on the latter. But they might at least have come up with a bag design to match.

On this same flight, I did get a rare glimpse of how damage may occur to otherwise mint-condition bags. While refuelling in Bahrain, my plane was invaded by a small army of cleaners. One had the task of replenishing bags in empty seat pockets. He unerringly identified the only pocket on the whole plane with a missing bag (the one from which I had just filched a bag). He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a fresh bag to stuff into the net.

Remarkable, because I didn't see him check any of the other seat pockets on the plane. How did he know my pocket was empty?

Connoisseurs of Plain Whites will recognize that the picture on the left depicts an Ariana, not a Gulf. I haven't yet had chance to scan my new Gulf acquisition, so you're going to have to wait for that particular thrill.

Bagsite of the month

Fredy Thürig's website features a convenient menu-driven bag gallery displaying his extensive collection. It's also got a pic of that Mecca of bagophiles, the ELAG factory in Kirchberg, Switzerland. Fredy pays a visit a couple of times a year to pick up the latest bags.

New bags, new swaps

At long last, I've updated the bags in the Gallery (see the menu on the left). The New Bags page lists all the newbie bags and all the wonderful people who sent them to me -unless they have requested anonymity in order to avoid embarrassment and ridicule.

My Swaps list is updated too. Email me if you'd like to trade bags.

I've split quite a few of the larger pages in the Gallery to reduce download times. I've also made separate sections for specialty items such as dogbags and sanitary bags to deal with the burgeoning numbers of bags in these categories.

On the left is a rarity: a barfbag that doubles as a sandwich bag. Nosh on your delicious inflight menu, then keep the bag in case of turbulence. Return the bag and contents to the cabin crew at the end of the flight.

Underbagged

What do Latvia, Liberia and Lesotho have in common? Yes, they all start with an L. What else? They're all missing from my barfbag collection.

What's the biggest country not represented? Chad. In terms of population? Burkina Faso. Other prominent absentees (coloured red in the map): Georgia and Rwanda.

Major underrepresented portions of the globe are a swathe of Africa and chunks of Central Asia and Central America.

Donations from these areas especially welcome!

Centres of megabagdiversity are the USA (though many US bags are distressingly plain), China, the UK, Canada, Germany, Brazil and Indonesia.

For new baggists only

New to the world of bag collecting? Want to get a head start on your collection? Then send me an email, and I'll send you a randomly selected free starter pack from my surplus bag stock. There won't be anything rare, and you may end up with some duplicates, but at least you'll be able to show your friends a few more of these lovely cultural artefacts. Make sure you include your mailing address in your email. Offer good as long as stocks last.
